PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, House Bill 1557 will prove to harm student freedom of expression and spread ignorance concerning LGBTQ matters; and

WHEREAS, This bill would make an important part of a student’s identity, be considered taboo and not allowed for discussion, which could result in compounding issues at school such as bullying and depression; and

WHEREAS, Officials indicate that such a law could stigmatize and dangerously isolate students and make teachers fearful of providing safe, inclusive classrooms across the state; and

WHEREAS, In response to this legislation, I feel it imperative to oppose such unfair action through participating in our local Chamber’s “rethink” Fellowship Program to assist high school students in completing a community project; and

WHEREAS,  My project endeavor…“Say Gay”, is a mission to spread awareness through website & logo creation, social media postings, community outreach at events, interviews, presentations, dispersing stickers & bookmarks and a 34th Street Wall mural painting; and

WHEREAS, June is designated as National Pride Month and the 28th, National Pride Day, we take time to reflect on the past and continue the fight for equality for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lauren Poe, by the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Gainesville, do hereby proclaim June 28, 2022 as

Say Gay Pride Day

in the City of Gainesville and invite all neighbors to join in recognizing efforts to spread human kindness.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the official seal of the City of Gainesville, Florida, this 25th day of April, A.D., 2022.
